Opening Night at Untermyer Park

Opening Night at Untermyer Park

Untermyer Performing Arts opened its 2019 World Fest on a June evening that could not have been more beautiful. The evening opened with master djembe player Arthur Lord leading the audience in “Funga Alfia”, a traditional West African welcome song. Some of the audience took the stage to learn the moves and then Arthur jumped off the stage into the audience, where he was joined by spontaneous dancers.

The 2019 Yonkers Idol contestants performed 3 numbers from their April Disney-themed show, and each contestant treated us to a solo song. Winners Amanda Gentile and Ada Victoria Israel sang a song from their winning performances, plus an additional number.

The evening finished with a rousing performance by the White Plains High School Mariachi Band, which has received state-wide recognition for its infectious, delightful renditions of traditional Mexican music.

The Untermyer Performing Arts Council’s

Recognition of the Contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

We thank the indigenous peoples, caretakers of Mother Earth for many millennia, realizing and respecting her gifts of water, fire and air. This relationship is based on their profound spiritual connection to Mother Earth, the connection that guided their ancestors to practice reverence, humility and reciprocity.

Everything taken is used with the understanding only what is needed is taken. What is taken is watchfully used, aware of the amount taken and the method with which it is taken, to ensure future generations are not put in peril

We gratefully acknowledge the Native peoples on whose ancestral homelands we present our .performances, as well as the Native Communities who make their home in the Yonkers area today.

By caring for Mother Earth, you care for all of us.
